SIVOA

Minutes: November 15, 2017

The meeting was held at the Silver Creek Saloon in Belleville.

In attendance: Jeff Toenjes, Andy Glauber, Augie Werner, Barb Maue, Diahann Gagen, Alice Laney, Larrie Wiggand, Wayne Wilhelm, George Davis, Mike Dean, Jason Unverzagt, and Jim Gallatin

President Jeff Toenjes called the meeting to order at 6:48 PM.

Barb Maue read the minutes from the Oct. 15, 2017 meeting.

Alice Laney read the treasurer’s report. The balance as of Nov. 15 is $1,897.08.

The 2018 IHSA Officials’ Conference will be held in Peoria on July 20-21. The association has received a letter from the IHSA concerning donations to help with the cost of the Friday night social and providing a door prize for the event. It was decided to donate $100 for the social and provide a $25 gift card as a door prize. These items must be sent by May 30th.

Augie Werner reported that he reached out to Metro East Lutheran High School concerning the scheduling of officials for volleyball. At this time, he has not heard back from them. He also reported that with the shifting of teams in the South Seven Conference, its schedule may be changing in the fall. That would require changes in the scheduling of official starting with next year’s girls’ schedule at Althoff. He has yet to receive the 2017 boys’ spring schedule from Althoff. He will continue to try to make contact with both schools.

A constant issue with the association is increasing its active membership. Jeff only sends meeting and informational emails to the active members who are current on their dues. He asked those in attendance if they thought these emails should be sent to both active and inactive members whose email addresses are still on the record. Barb Maue suggested sending a follow-up email with an application attached to any members who did not sign-up during the initial application period. Alice Laney also suggested that an agenda be sent out prior to each meeting so members know what will be discussed at that meeting.

Since our bylaws require that members attend at least 2 meetings, the list of attendees at the meetings needs to be checked to make sure that all members are abiding by this stipulation.

Jim Gallatin reported on our SIVOA website. The site crashed and Jim is working to rebuild it. Members can log on at sivoa.org

Three members of the SIVOA participated in the 2017 Girls’ Volleyball State Tournament. Andy Glauber served as a floor official, Jeff Toenjes was a line judge, and Barb Maue served as the Officials’ Coordinator.

Both Andy and Jeff talked about their experience at the state tourney. One of most important parts of having a positive officiating experience is a good pre-match conference between officials, including the line judges if you have them for your match. Although we don’t always have these conferences, it’s an important part in establishing communication during the match and having a successful officiating experience.

Election of officers took place. Barb Maue will remain as Secretary, Alice Laney will retain the Treasurer’s position, Wayne Wilhelm will take over the duties of President in the fall, and Diahann Gagen was nominated and elected as the new Vice President.

The next meeting will be held on April 8 at Silver Creek Saloon. It will begin at 1 pm. Members are encouraged to attend even if they do not call during the high school boys’ season.

Since this was the last meeting of the year, members enjoyed food and drink.

Meeting was adjourned at 7:47.
