Minutes: April 7, 2019

The meeting was held at Silver Creek Saloon and Grill in Belleville, IL In attendance: Andy Glauber, Wayne Wilhelm, Diahann Gagen, Alice Laney, Barb Maue, and Augie Werner, Jim Gallatin, Jason Unverzagt, George Davis, and Mike Dean.

Wayne Wilhelm called the meeting to order at 1:08 pm. Barb Maue read the minutes from the Dec. 5, 2018 meeting.

Alice Laney read the Treasurer’s report. The balance as of 4/4/2019 is $1382.68.

Augie Werner was asked for an update on assigning. He received the Althoff boys’ schedule for the upcoming season at the end of January. Other than that, he had nothing additional to report.

It was reported that E.St.Louis had dropped their boys’ program. Also Marquette only has a JV squad, while Father McGivney is playing with both a JV and a Varsity team. There were rumors that Collinsville was considering starting a boys’ team, but nothing further has been heard. The existing teams in the area have discussed the possibility of starting a freshman program. Most teams report that they do not have enough players. The only schools capable of fielding a freshman team are O’Fallon and Edwardsville.

Jim Gallatin relayed information on the SIVOA website. It is up and running under a different host. We have the same domain, and only members’ phone numbers and email addresses will be found on the site; not mailing addresses.

The IHSA Officials’ Conference will be held in Peoria on July 19-20. Associations have been contacted for donations and door prizes for the social held on Friday night. Levels for donations are: Bronze ($100), Silver ($150 and one conference fee waiver.), or Gold ($200 and two conference fee waivers.). The SIVOA will donate at the Bronze level and provide a gift card for a door prize. Jim Gallatin mentioned that he might be interested but had to check the dates.

Sam Knox, IHSA Associate Director of Officials, sent out an email concerning the Pregame Medical Huddle that all officials in all sports should include in their meeting with captains and coaches before all contests. 3 key questions should be asked: 1) Is there a trainer/doctor at today’s contest? 2) If so, this same trainer/doctor can clear a visiting team player to return to the game. If not, the injured player will not be able to return to the game that day. 3) Is there an AED, and where is it?

The annual SIVOA Clinic will be held on Aug. 18 at the Collinsville High School. It will run from 12:30 to 4:30 with a SIVOA meeting directly after the clinic.

Just a reminder….the licensing period for the IHSA runs from May 1 to June 30.

Barb Maue and Augie Werner discussed with the members the POE’s from the girls’ state tournament as the educational component of the meeting. Many of these points dealt with R2 positioning and signaling. Look for these POE’s on the SIVOA website.

Future meetings of the SIVOA are as follows: Aug. 18 – after the clinic Sept. 15 – 1 pm Oct. 13 – 1 pm Nov. 20 – 6 pm April 19, 2020 – 1 pm Meetings will be held at the Silver Creek Saloon and Grill in Belleville, IL.

Diahann Gagen suggested that it might be a good idea for members of the association to reach out to the newer members to see how the officiating is going, and to ask if they had questions or need some guidance. Barb and Diahann will coordinate this.

Meeting adjourned at 3:20 pm.
